Azuela provided very little background to the revolution, which could be a good thing, but by still paralleling his plot with actual people and places, his failure to provide any context made the book annoying. The Underdogs was originally published in serial form in El Paso del Underdoge in I was interested in the story. Some of them are prototypes of the kind of people that was dragged into the revolution, like Demetrio, whose name is associated with the goddess of farming and agriculture Demeter ; the dog, Palomo, killed at the beginning who symbolizes peace.
